Artist's Comments

Coming home from a festive weekend spent with good friends, as I often do, I drove by the beach and was reminded again of why I love the beauty of Santa Cruz. This is a completely un-altered sunset photo, taken earlier today.

(Well I may have straightened the horizon as I seem to hold the camera crooked sometimes...)

Other shots of this area:

:bulletblue:[ Santa Cruz LightHouses] - similar perspective, taken during the day.

"..great potential. if you utilize the already existant layering effect that created by the perspective i think you can make an extrodinary picture. dodge the forground in PS until it is completely black then isolate the sunset and water and increase the contrast along with the saturation just a hair and see where that get you. it should creat a very discernable diference between the forground silouette the middle sillouette and the background silouette. culminating in a brilliant and well emphasised sunset"

I can see why you choose this drive. So very lovely on screen - must have been breathtaking in person. What a moment to sit and be thankful. Very grounding.

Great shot! I like how you managed to take it while you could get a bit of contrast on the silouhettes and the background.

Glad you like it. It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time.

Since I live near the beach, I often drive by on my way home. Most days are merely beautiful. Some days are overcast or raining. And then there are sunsets like that one! One like that happens only a few times a year. I was lucky. :)

Thanks! I agree. I'm pleased it turned out as well as it did. Believe it or not though, I caught it a couple of minutes after it peaked. Everyone was pulling over and taking pictures. I had trouble finding a place to park. :)

Dumb Luck, or perhaps making my luck by frequently driving by the beach, so I was there at a time when it was being exceptionaly beautiful....

Yes. It was. I tried to do a panorama, but that didn't turn out, the light was overexposed on the setting sun area.

Next time I'll try with a tripod if I can, and sweep from left to right *and* from right to left, in an effort to even out the lighting.

It truly was a beautiful moment. Practically everone at the beach had their cameras out!
